Networking 101: The Kenny Kim Effect

Kenny Kim and I at the Washington DC Free to Succeed Tour with David Jay

In June of 2008 while riding the Metrorail, I happened to listen to a podcast with Ron Dawson and he was interviewing Kenny Kim. Out of all of Ron’s podcasts that I had listened to previously, this one stuck out in my mind a little bit more than most. I was really impressed with how Kenny had accomplished so much in such a short period of time in the wedding industry. I listened to him share everything from his networking method to his faith and thought to myself “I am going to take a chance and reach out to this guy”. So I did, I sent him an email and he responded back to me within a couple of hours. To my surprise he was in the Washington DC area that day! I gave him a call and he invited me to come and hang out for a while with him and some other photographers.

That afternoon I got home, jumped on my motorcycle and rode out to Reston Town Center in Virginia where he was there doing a get together style shoot with a bunch of other photographers who I did not know from a can of paint. So here I am standing around all of these photographers holding nothing but my motorcycle jacket with no camera or business cards. (the stuff you think of when you are 40 miles from the house LOL). Anyway, that was the day that I met Kenny Kim, Armin DeFiesta, Noah Hayes, Peter Bang and others that I know I am forgetting!! It has been just over a year and we all stay in pretty constant contact with each other, get together often and try to track Kenny and his world travels. Meeting these other photographers made my first trip to WPPI this year so much more fun. It’s always good to see familiar faces when you’re in the midst of 10,000 other photographers.

If I learned anything from meeting Kenny, it’s that sometimes you have to take a chance and reach out to those around you if you want any type of success in your business. If I had not done that to meet Kenny, I may not have had a chance to meet so many other great photographers in the Washington DC area.

Armin - Great post, good words about networking too. It was me, Paul Price, Peter Bang, Noah Hayes, you & Kenny. One of Washingtonian's top wedding planners Laura Auer of Wish Special Events also joined us briefly too! And yeah I recall KK telling me some guy was coming all the way from MD last minute to join us... only to show up with an iPhone to take photos! I thought to myself, okay he's either desperate or he's just so good all he needs is an iPhone, LOL! Good times =)July 7, 2009 - 2:34 pm

Kenny KIm - Good times man. Armin, I thought exact samething about the iphone. If he can take photos like this w/ an iphone imagine what he can do with a real camera! bam! Thanks for your insight. ;)July 7, 2009 - 4:41 pm
